West Ham Memories - Lucas Neill

What are your memories of our former Aussie skipper? For me, right man at the time, a good leader and I'll always remember the ball to Zamora which ended up over Jens Lehman's head and into the net during our 'Great Escape' season.
Limited player, ex Millwall of course, a mercenary in every sense of the word, tough as nails and I think his leadership qualities helped shape Mark Noble's role as a leader.
Ultimately I have fond memories, but a bit of an unsung hero during his time with us, yet a vital member of the Curbishley era.

I did not think that my opinion of scousers, lower than a snake's belly anyway, could possible get any lower. Then I read that excerpt from that massive cunt Carragher's autobiography and that really does sum him up. Spits at little girls but thinks he is really hard cos a couple of scouse pussies thinks that a tackle that broke his leg needed retribution. Can I remind the scouse toe-rag that in his profession that he got highly paid for that tackles and injuries are part and parcel of the game. But not apparently for this cunt he thinks he can orchestrate a 'hit' on a player who tackled him. Cunt of the highest order and that's saying something, it makes him King of the Scousers, well done Carragher

Nearly getting smacked fully in the face with the ball at Upton Park when he booted a clearance into the stand. I managed to deflect it away and he put his hand up in apology.
My mate's comment was something along the lines of "shame you can't save them like that when you try to play in goal". He had a point to be fair.

Liverpool spread word that he took loads of money to join us, but he actually took less than Liverpool were offering and they didn't like it. The press was always full of £80k (IIRC), but he was on £34k.

I think we've all come across mouthy types who try and intimidate and threaten by saying things like they know "people"
It was pretty common when I was growing up...not so much now
That sort of thing happens without fanfare...nobody brags about it

From Carragher's autobiography:-
When my leg was broken in an horrific tackle by Lucas Neill in September 2003, my mates were ready to hunt him down if I gave the go-ahead.
A few weeks later I received a phone call. “You won’t believe this, Jay. We’re in the Trafford Centre and Lucas Neill is walking straight towards us. What do you reckon?”
Did I really want Neill to take a crack? “There’s only one problem,” added the voice. “Little Davey Thommo is with him.”
That was that. I could hardly let one of my best mates, David Thompson, now a Blackburn player, become a witness to an assault. Besides he’d have recognised the attackers. The impromptu mission was aborted and I sent a text to Thommo telling him Neill should give him a hug of thanks.
As word got back to Blackburn about the near miss, or should that be hit, their coach Terry Darracott, a Scouser, appealed to one of my friends to call the boys off. I agreed.
